It was Cai who answered, with his sharp grin. ‘We know plenty of those. Yes, we know who made the darkness. His name is Llwyd ap Cil Coed. He did something of the kind once before.’ He gave a quick glance at Arthur. ‘This is his revenge on us.’

Arthur said, ‘I hear you’re a good tumbler. Show us.’

I stared, astonished. ‘Here?’

‘Now.’

The heat of the wine scorched my cheeks. I looked round; they were all watching.

‘Come on,’ Bedwyr snapped. ‘Let’s see.’

I stood up and pulled off my jerkin. Was this all they wanted, then, some after-meat entertainment from the scrawniest boy in the war band? Surely they had enough harpers and dancers without picking on me?

The floor was clear. I stood lightly on my hands and ran a few steps, my hair falling in my eyes. Then I stood and flipped forward, once, twice and then backwards as high and light as I could.

‘Stand on one hand,’ Morgan said, coming forward from the shadows.

I obeyed, lifting my left hand carefully from the ground, feeling the ache in my right, the growing wobble in my body. Quickly, I rolled and jumped up.

‘And is it true,’ Gwalchmai asked quietly, ‘that you climbed the siege ladder yesterday and jumped as it fell?’
